Is there an adapter sold on Amazon that you can recommend that will be 100% safe to use?
I have yet to pull the radio apart but I smelled smoke when I tuned the radio and now I have 1-2 watts on UHF and only half power on the VHF. The HF has full power on all bands. I am guessing before I even open the cover that something happened to the VHF/UHF board. I find that strange as the tuner only tunes the HF, so why would it cause a failure to the VHF/UHF? there must be a correlation between the remote connection from the radio to the LDG-Z-100plus I use. I will start looking at the schematics and see what circuits are in line with the path the remote connection takes. If anything would fail I would expect the HF since that's what was in tune when this happened. I have tuned this radio the same way for over a year and the only thing that was different was the solar storms we were having at that time. All of this is moot until I get the cover off.... ( oh and yes, I tested the antennas and grounds, etc._)
Das war eine schöne Reparatur! Gut zu sehen wie man ein Fehler findet. Ein Nadel im Heuhafen zu finden, doch es war im Menu!
Das stimmt 👍
I realize this video is quite old but be advised it is still appreciated in 2024. You are amazing. Will you adopt me?
Of course

While I understand the genuine negative feedback, this should go to the vendor. Give them an opportunity to correct. If they don't show interest in correcting then sure, give them a public wrap. This looks like a very featured unit with great ideas. Just needs to get the accuracy right. Once they do this will be a far better meter than most.
many mnay WAR game commercials and advertisements. . .. WR, , , WAR, , , ,WAR, , , games. . . / / /
Sorry we can't influnce YT
Thank you very much my friend
It looks like a power surge maybe a lightning strike on the antenna? Not many tecnician would have been able to repair it ( me neither) Kudos
Thank you very much appreciated!
A question: between this one, or yeasu ft 990 or yeasu ft 1000. Wich one should I choose and why?
Love your channel but the amount of adverts drive me nuts and interfere with my concentration!
Sorry, we don't have any influence on the adverts YT put on
Great video!!!! I have the exact problem and the exact transceiver. What I don't have is the cool testing equipment. What was the diode called that you replaced and do you have to order it through Yaesu? Thanks
Thank you. You can use a 1N4004 or similar.
Hi, a question not related to your repair for but for my FT-5DR is regarding bluetooth, does the original software have a problem connecting, does an update fix that ? I can't get any of my headsets to connect.
We have never experienced a connecting issue with BT. Maybe there is a hardware problem.
in your oinion. is 991 deaf on 11meters (CB) because not a amateur band?
No that is not the problem..
Thanks for this video, is it possible to clean the acid by putting board in an ultrasonic cleaning bath?
Most likely not but I'm not chemist and don't know a cleaning supp to ultrasonic
Hello Peter - great video and very informative. I have an FT897ND and find it a really great trx. 73
Thank you
I really like your videos but there are too many ads that prevent me from staying engaged. Literally every 30 to 30 seconds I get an ad and it it makes it hard to follow what your doing. I have to tap out, sorry…
Sorry, we have no influence on YT, and we even don't know the frequency of ads
Hi Peter, Please what is the name of the active probe you use with your spectrum analyzer to check levels? Thank you very much sir
So now will you repair the broken encoder ?
That makes no sense for us
@@TRXLab I guess I can understand that.
I would love that you would have a look into the same system I have which has intermittent faults. Do you allow repairs to be made at your workshop?
Hello Peter, I have relaized 3 chokes with succsess with your useful instructions of yours videos. All three are working like in your video! Thanks !!! The maximum power used till now is 350W. I'm planning to use 600W for the future. @ min. 15:27 you said that with two cores we can reach about 2KW (To be tested!). Please, may I know with only one core how may power it can handle (aproximatly, of course and to be tested of course)? Don't worry, for me you are NOT responsable of any damage for this data that I'm asking you. Just your opinion to help me to have an idea about it. Another question about the test that shoul be done without destroing anything: I'm thinking to increase power a little bit time by time, starting from 100W with step of 20/30W with acycle of 15s power and 15s of pause. What should I expect when I reach the max power? SWR should start to increase a little bit or it will suddenly increase to high value? Please help. Anyway, THANKS!!! Regards! Andrea

Every one minute there’s an ad!, really?
I like those yellow cables you have ..... Do you make then yourself or do you order them online ? I use the RG-316 with the smaller BNC connectors , I ordered a couple from Cable Wholesale , then I ordered 5 more from Ali Xpress , same exact coax cables as the other ones ......
Hello, I have a ic 7000 with low output power. Do you accept repairs ?
Great job on that lil unit .......That's a Blast from the Past .....
I started an auto tune like so many before and the radio smoked. I haven’t cracked the case yet but I only get half power on all bands… I know there are 2 separate boards for vhf/uhf and the hf but I suspect one of the finals has failed.
Excellent work!!
Nice de wb8idy
Beautiful Lab !!❤
Hi Peter, Thanks for this video, ik made for the first time this 9:1. I ll have one question how to connect to the connectors? Can you send me a picture please? 73 PD2LM
@nspk really my past learning became perfect after watching this video. Great learning experience !! Mechanics having problem to attend SMPS must watch this video.
This is an amazing video, thanks so much for posting such videos. Thanks to Internet and youtube and knowledgeable and kind people like you, these kinds of tacit knowledge can be transmitted to people around the world. 73
Hello Peter. This video is one prime example of why not to buy a switch mode PSU.
the series inductance will be unnecessarily high with your through line configuration ! this can be measured by shorting one port and measuring the other port impedance with a nanovna
Great video for anyone wishing to know how to start doing their own diagnostics. I have built one of these radios a few years ago, and they are a very fun build. Whenever soldering toroids I will first use a small diamond file to moves as much lacquer as I can and then tin, holding the wire in a blob of solder for maybe 10 - 15 seconds. Then when I solder to the board I leave a little wire on the joint and use that to check continuity with another joint somewhere on the board. Then I trim once I have confrmed a good connection. I have built many radios, tuners, amplifiers etc. using this technique and have had pretty much 100% success.
Thanks for feed back!
TRX, Did you calibrate the FX773 prior to the test?
no, it should be calibrated right from factory otherwise it makes no senses for HAM use since not everybody have the needed equipment
A good reason not to buy a built kit from someone unless you know and trust the original builder.
Hi peter trust you are well great repair keep them coming good to hear from you
Thanks John, all fine here but much to do....
Would this work for a uhf radio?
no not possible
@@TRXLab I need to figure out solution to build preamp for my UHF.
All kenwood TS 50 s Have to need leaking capacitor problem???🤔. İ have a TS 50..only problem i lived is memory battery finished..neither leaking capacitor nor other problem... What are doing those amateurs with this radio? Cooking omlet on it or sleeping together at nights???🙄
Maybe your radio is a later batch.
an excellent piece of logical deduction( electronic engineering), my 994brt works just fine but tempted to break the seals to inspect the inductors in the bias T. great work
Thank you!
Excellent thank you
Thank you
Hi Peter, Great video and interesting to me as I'm looking for a spare complete PA module as I've picked up a cheap FT-736R with one missing. I have a good original M57762 module I've had for years, but the alloy housing with PCB, relay, socket etc is missing from the radio. Just a couple of points: The M57762 is ESD sensitive and was supplied in a shielding bag with dissipative foam between the pins for physical and ESD protection. I would suggest you should only handle it at an ESD workstation and whilst you're grounded via a wrist-strap bonded to the work mat. It would be a shame to kill it even before it's installed. Oh and don't forget to ensure your soldering iron is bonded and your tools are ESD safe. When you assemble the module, fit it to the metal backplate before soldering the pins to the PCB, as otherwise you can get it slightly out of place if you solder it to the board first which can put a strain on the fragile pins when you screw it to the housing which can break them away leaving the module scrap.
very good point for a beginner
wow made one and its so perfect flat across the band at 200 ohm, is there a design for a 2:1 Balun you have done ?
Hello Peter and greetings from County Clare Ireland. Nifty job. I ofttimes wonder why Mr Yaesu, Icom etc don't manufacture circuit board which would be easier to navigate and service and repair. It seems that manufacturers are hell bent on making it impossible to carry out repairs.
Thank you! Well these days everything is about profit, that is what we see here as well.
